Why Allegis is special
Our Roots
Established in 1957, Allegis was originally chartered to serve State of Michigan employees in seven counties in Southwestern Michigan. The Branch County community was added in 1989 in the merger with Coldwater Area Credit Union. In 1996, Allegis built a new office in the main office’s current location on Venture Park in Oshtemo Township. In 2001, the name was changed to Allegis Credit Union in order to diversify and represent the expanding field of membership. In 2003, a new office was built in Coldwater, in the same location as the previous office. In early 2006, Allegis was given a “Community Charter”, which made anyone who lives, works, worships, or goes to school in Allegan, Branch, Calhoun, Kalamazoo, or Van Buren counties eligible for membership. In June 2006, the third branch office was opened in Paw Paw. Over the years, Allegis Credit Union has grown into a full-service financial institution with over 10,000 members.
Since its inception, Allegis’ primary mission has been to serve the financial needs of its members, and this continues to be the driving force behind the credit union. By effectively serving its members through the years, Allegis Credit Union has built a reputation of quality and dependability that has served it well.
Staff & Board
One of the things that makes Allegis special are the people who work there. The staff understands the true meaning of service and applies it to their interaction with members every day.
Allegis Credit Union, like all credit unions, is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors. Directors are members who are voted for by other members. This system ensures that the best interest of our members is the driving force behind everything we do.
Your Board of Directors
Scott Carter is President of various real estate ownership and development companies and has over 24 years of experience in the real estate industry. He received his CPA from DePaul University in Chicago, IL, his MBA from Michigan State University, and his BBA from Western Michigan University. Scott belongs to numerous professional organizations and is currently the Chairman of Allegis Credit Union’s Board of Directors.
Tim Hoyle is an industrial sales professional with 30 years of experience. He holds a BBA from Western Michigan University in business management. Tim is a member of the Instrumentation Society of America. He also holds a private pilot's license. Tim has been a member of Allegis Credit Union for over 23 years and is volunteering for his second term on the Board of Directors.
Dana Slocum is a licensed Real Estate Broker with over 20 years of Real Estate experience. He and his wife own and operate nine ERA Network Real Estate offices in West Michigan. In addition to serving on the board of directors for Allegis , Dana is also a member of the Oshtemo Rotary, member of the Oshtemo DDA Board of Directors and a member of four Western Michigan Realtor Boards. In 2008 he will be president of the Southwest Board of Realtors. Dana, his wife, Tami and their daughter reside in Oshtemo. Their son is a Freshman at Western Michigan University. Dana has been a member of Allegis Credit Union for seven years.
Deb Jager has been a member of Allegis Credit Union since 1969. She attended Delton Kellogg High School and Western Michigan University. Deb was employed at Allegis (when it was called Southwestern State Employees Credit Union) for 24 years, from 1969 to 1993. She ran an adult foster care with her husband from 1986 to 2006 and has completed 520 hours of massage training at the Kalamazoo Center for the Healing Arts. Deb joined Allegis Credit Union's Board of Directors in 1997 and enjoys her involvement in the credit union. Deb takes pride in looking at situations from both the member's and employee's view, as well as a board member's view.
Deb enjoyed working at the credit union because she got to know the members and their families and they knew her. It really felt like a family to her, not just a business. Deb loves doing anything with her family, which includes her twin sons, Jason and Josh, her daughters-in-law, Jennifer and Jamie, and her four grandchildren, Jordan, Jared, Jade, and Kyan.
Gil Guzman retired from the State of Michigan in March 2000 after 31 years of service. He now works for McDonald’s as a human resources supervisor. Gil has been a member of Allegis Credit Union since 1970. Besides being on the Board of Directors, he is also involved in the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Ronald McDonald House, and Little League. Gil feels Allegis Credit Union is special because they have always been there for him and his family. He enjoys being on the Board because it allows him to help people and ensure that Allegis will be there for other families, too. In his extra time, he manages four local bands (Los Bandits, Bronk Brothers, Headin’ South, and Frankie Ballard & Texas Two). Gil and his wife, Lorrie, have three children, Mechelle, Joe, and Carlos.
Rod Olney is a 1965 graduate of Hanover-Horton High School in Jackson. He spent 2 years in the Army as a military policeman before working as a Michigan State Trooper for 30 years. Since his retirement in 2002, Rod has served on the Allegis Credit Union Credit Committee and as a Branch County commissioner (he serves on 12 sub-committees!), and was elected to the Allegis Credit Union Board of Directors in April 2006. Rod has been married for 39 years and has 3 children and 7 grandchildren, with another on the way.
Richard Atwell retired from Western Michigan University in 2000 following more than thirty years with WMU in a career that included teaching and administrative positions in broadcast media and professional development. Following his retirement, he consulted with organizations in southwest Michigan on issues of communication and planning.
He spent the past ten years as a community volunteer in public transportation with the City of Kalamazoo's Transit Authority Board and later with the Kalamazoo County Transportation Authority, serving as chairman of both boards. He was honored as recipient of the 2008 STAR Community Leadership Award by the Kalamazoo Volunteer Center and the Kalamazoo Gazette for his work on behalf of public transportation. For the past three years he has served on the Allegis CU Credit Committee, including two years as its chairman. Richard has been a member of Allegis Credit Union for thirty five years. He is excited about the opportunity to serve the members of Allegis on its Board of Directors.
As your Board of Directors, we are working hard to make Allegis the best credit union. We hope you enjoy your membership!
